How to Help Your AC Keep Up in Extreme Heat (Piedmont Triad, NC)

When the Piedmont Triad hits a heat wave, your air conditioner has to work harder for longer. A few smart habits can help your system cool more effectively, reduce strain, and lower the chance of a breakdown.

1) Set realistic thermostat targets

On very hot days, trying to hold an ultra-low indoor temperature can push your system to run nonstop. Aim for a comfortable, steady setting and avoid frequent big swings. If you have a programmable thermostat, use gradual changes instead of large jumps.

2) Change (or clean) your air filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow, which makes your AC work harder and can lead to icing or poor cooling. In peak summer, check it monthly. If it looks dirty, replace it (or clean it if it’s a washable type).

3) Keep the outdoor unit clear

Your condenser needs breathing room. Trim plants back and remove leaves, grass clippings, and debris around the unit. Keep at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides, and don’t block the top.

4) Help your home keep cool

  • Close blinds/curtains on sunny windows during the hottest part of the day.

  • Use ceiling fans to circulate air (remember: fans cool people, not rooms—turn them off when you leave).

  • Avoid heat-producing chores (oven, dryer) during peak afternoon hours when possible.

5) Don’t ignore warning signs

Call for service if you notice weak airflow, warm air from vents, unusual noises, frequent cycling, or ice on the refrigerant line. Catching issues early can prevent bigger repairs.
